SFA Middle School Teacher Recognized Among the World’s Best

A longtime Bryan ISD teacher is being recognized as one of the best in the world when it comes to educating students in technology and engineering.

The International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) has named SFA Middle School’s Naveen Cunha a 2019 ITEEA Teacher Excellence Award winner.

Cunha is the coordinator of Bryan ISD’s highly regarded Odyssey Program, an advanced-academics science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) that provides an interdisciplinary, technology-rich environment allowing students to follow the “Mission to Mars” theme on a journey to colonize Mars throughout their three years in the program.

“The purpose of the Teacher Excellence Award is to identify outstanding technology and engineering teachers who will serve as models for their colleagues and who could form a leadership core to affect change in the field,” Cunha said. “Having been involved in this organization for several years, I have witnessed the role these teachers play in consulting, advising, modeling, and sharing with colleagues and leaders of the importance of such disciplines. I am honored to be a part of this group and help forward the cause of technology and engineering education.”

This recognition comes on the heels of ITEEA recognizing Odyssey with a 2018 Program Excellence Award and accentuates how this unique Bryan ISD program is serving as a model for schools around the world when it comes to teaching technology and engineering.

“These awards recognize programs and educators that are impacting and making a significant difference in the lives of their students and their development of technological literacy,” SFA Middle School Principal Rachel Layton said. “Thank you, Mr. Cunha, for your dedication to the students of Bryan ISD!”

Cunha will receive the award at the ITEEA Conference in Kansas City next month.
