English as a Second Language (ESL)

Purpose/Goal


The goal of the program if for English Language Learners (ELLs) to become competent in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English through the integrated use of second language methods.

Program Description/Summary

English as a Second Language Programs (ESL) offer instruction designed to develop  proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in the English language.  Instruction in ESL shall be commensurate with the student’s level of English proficiency and his or her level of academic achievement. ESL programs use English as the language of instruction when delivering content.

In Bryan ISD, we have both an ESL Pull-out and an ESL Content Based program:

ESL Pull Out

ESL Content-Based

●      Can be delivered in a separate setting or within the general education setting.

●      An ESL-certified teacher provides English language arts instruction.

●      Exit typically occurs between two and five years after enrollment.

 

●      Program services are provided in content area classrooms where English is developed through sheltered area content instruction.

●      K-grade 6:  Content area instruction is provided by ESL-certified teachers.
