Section 504

Section 504 is a part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits discrimination based upon disability.  Section 504 is an anti-discrimination, civil rights statute that requires the needs of students with disabilities to be met as adequately as the needs of the non-disabled are met. To be protected under Section 504, a student must have or be regarded as having a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.  A section 504 plan works to mitigate the disability and even the playing field in order to provide a free and appropriate education.

Bryan ISD strives to meet the needs of all students in our District with or without a disability.  Through Child Find, students will be referred for a §504 evaluation as needed. The §504 committee is responsible for disaggregating a variety of data points and determining placement.

For any questions related to your student’s Section 504 plan, a referral for Section 504 or general information about Section 504 please contact your student's school Counselor or
