Transitional Bilingual Early Exit Program

Purpose/Goal

The goal of the program is for Emergent Bilinguals to become competent in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English through the development of literacy and academic skills in the primary language and English. Students receive bilingual instruction with the goal of exiting between two and five years.

Program Description/Summary

In this model, Emergent Bilinguals build initial literacy and basic academic content in their first language. During instruction teachers use the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) to develop English oral and academic language. Transition to instruction in English is accomplished rapidly.

Qualification Requirement

If the home language survey indicates a language other than English during the enrollment process, students are administered the oral language proficiency test and the Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC) determines placement.

This program is available at zoned campuses and open to all students who qualify as Emergent Bilinguals. The elementary schools zoned for the Transitional Bilingual Early Exit Program are Bonham, Branch, Crockett, Fannin, Henderson, Jones, Kemp-Carver, Navarro, Neal, and Jane Long Intermediate School.
