THAI VU

Texas A&M Corps of Cadets Graduate

Thai vu

Thai Vu started as a kindergartener at Fannin Elementary in Bryan ISD and graduated from Rudder High School in 2015. He went on to join the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band and graduate in 2019 as a member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets.

We sat down with Thai to ask the following questions:

How did your experience at Rudder prepare you for the Corps of Cadets?

I had teachers like Ms. Timberman, Mr. Walker and Ms. Huff who really challenged me in the classroom. From an academic point of view, they prepared me for how college would be. The Corps was just a whole different beast. But I was in the band at Rudder and I was in the band there and it felt similar enough that I could transition into it.

Was being a part of the Aggie Band a life-long dream?

Actually, no. When I was finishing up at SFA and going to Rudder, I learned that there was a fine arts credit that I had to have. Since I was already in band I thought I might as well just participate in band to get the credit, but I didn't want to march. But I ended up doing my one year of band my freshman year at Rudder and ended up loving it. I did all four years of band there and realized it was something I wanted to keep doing. Around my junior year is when I learned more about the Aggie Band and the Corps. Prior to that, I didn't know that much about the Corps even though A&M was right in my backyard. I didn't know where I really wanted to go.

What motivates you?

Being proud of my answer whenever someone asks me what I'm doing with my life.

What advice would you give to someone just starting in Bryan ISD?

Don't try to follow the crowd around you. There's going to be people that want to go into industries and majors that are popular, but that might not be what's good for you. Use other people for advice, but also remember that you have your own path.

Thai enlisted in the Marines recently and is about to enter Officer Candidate School.
